William the Conqueror 1066-1087AD Silver Penny Paxs type Winchcombe mint – Extremely Rare
£2,500.00
William the Conqueror 1066-1087AD Silver Penny Paxs type, Moneyer Goldwine, Winchcombe mint (Gloucestershire). Excessively rare.
19mm, 1.43g, S1257, +GOLDPINE ON PINEL
obverse somewhat weak, reverse better and clear mint signature.
An exciting addition to the very small number of coins known for the small provincial mint of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. Just 41 coins (across both the Saxon and Norman period) are known for this mint, 8 of which are struck during the reign of William the Conqueror.
On a recent visit to the town we happened upon ‘mint house’, perhaps suggesting that this was the site of the Saxon & Norman mint some 1000 years earlier.
