Viking Danish East Anglia 885-915AD St Edmund Silver Penny
18mm, 1.39g
Edmund is considered to have originated from East Anglia, though little is known about him. He was killed in c.870AD for refusing to renounce Christ, following ongoing hostilities after a combined invasion by Norse warriors. He became venerated as a saint and a martyr, and his shrine made Bury St Edmunds a significant place of pilgrimage. The memorial coinage was issued around the time East Anglia was absorbed into Wessex by Edward the Elder.
Example with clear legends on full flan, struck on good metal.
