Theophilus was the second emperor of the Amorian dynasty. He was the son of the Byzantine Emperor Michael II and his wife Thekla, and godson of Leo V the Armenian. Theophilos jointly reigned with his father as co-emperor from 822AD and succeeded his father as sole emperor in 829AD. He was a well educated military leader, pursuing a lifelong war against the Arabs which began in 831AD. Theophilus was the last emperor to practice iconoclasm.
