The reverse shows Ceres seated left, holding corn-ear, poppy and torch.
Titus was the son of Vespasian, founder of the Flavian dynasty that ruled the Empire for 27 years. He is best known for completing the Colosseum and for his generosity in relieving the suffering caused by two disasters, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and a large fire in Rome in AD 80. He was well liked and would have probably ruled for a long time had he not died of a fever in AD 81.
Excellent portrait and details to both obverse and reverse, lovely surfaces.
Provenance – from the Dawson collection of ancient coins.
