Obverse showing charioteer driving a biga of mules right, holding reigns in both hands, Nike (Victory) flying right above, crowning mules, leaf and fruit in exergue. The obverse depicts a hare leaping right, a dolphin right below, MEΣ-Σ-A-N-IO-N around.
The hare occurs in various forms within the Sicilian coinage series and was considered to be a symbol of good luck.The obverse imagery showing a biga of driven mules apparently signifies the success of Anaxilas and, winning the mule biga event at the Olympic games in 484 or 480BC.
