Procopius of Caesarea (Israel) was a Roman usurper against Valens, and a member of the Constantinian dynasty. He was a prominent Byzantine Greek scholar and accompanied the Byzantine general Belisarius in the Emperor Justinian’s wars. Procopius became the principal Byzantine historian of the 6th century, and wrote on the History of the Wars, Buildings amongst other subjects. He is often referred to as the last major historian of the ancient Western world.
