Phocas led a revolt in 602AD against the emperor Maurice Tiberius, capturing Constantinople and declaring himself Byzantine emperor. Phocas was not a successful leader, and the Byzantine Empire was threatened with frequent raids from the Avars and Slavs in the Balkans, and the Sassanids from the east. Heraclius the Elder, the exarch of Carthage rebelled against him and his son, Heraclius, took Constantinople and had Phocas executed in 610AD.
