Mary restored the English coinage back to the sterling standard. In 1554 she married the heir to the Spanish throne, Philip of Spain, the son of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. Groats of this period include ‘Philip’ in the obverse legend, but show Mary’s portrait only, compared to the facing busts of the larger denominations.
