The Achaemenid Empire (6th-4th century BC) is also known as the first Persian Empire, ranging at it’s greatest extent from the Balkans to the Indus Valley. It had centralised administration, a road infrastructure, ‘postal system’, an official language and a large professional army.
The Achaemenid ‘daric’ was a gold coin which, along with a similar silver denomination, the siglos, represent the bi-metallic monetary standard system of the early Persian Empire.
