Maurice Tiberius was a successful military general against the Sassanid Persians and subsequently expanded the empire’s eastern border. He also campaigned in the Balkans, pushing back the Avars across the Danube. Maurice Tiberius established two large provinces in the west, in Italy and Africa, further strengthening the power of Constantinople. However, financial troubles and continuous warfare led Phocas to have him executed and usurp the throne.
