Dating to the middle Bronze Age in Britain, the palstave was hafted by a forked wooden handle which would have been kept in place with high, cast flanges and a stop bar. The axe is thicker on the blade side of the stop bar than on the hafting side. Palstaves were manufactured by casting bronze in paired moulds typically made of clay, stone or bronze.
