Kings of Scotland Alexander II in his own name 1235-49AD Roxburgh – ext. Rare
16x17mm, 1.11g
This is an extremely rare coin of Alexander II of Scotland in his own name. He struck one issue in the name of his father (William the Lion) then very few in his own name during his short, turbulent reign before dying of a fever while trying to regain the Hebrides from Norway. He took the throne at the age of sixteen and was followed by his son, Alexander III at the age of seven!
A real piece of Scottish history.
This coin comes with an old Spink ticket.
