A good exmaple of this iconic type, obverse inscription ‘COENVVLF REX M’ boldly stating ‘Coenwulf, king of Mercia’. Reverse showing Tribach with moneyers name DVDA around.

Coenwulf was king of Mercia, succeeding Offa’s son Ecgfrith. He was descended from the 7th century king Penda of Mercia. During his reign he had to actively re-gain the kingdoms of East Anglia and Kent.
