Ceolwulf I (821-823): The brother of Coenwulf, Ceolwulf reigned for just two years. Despite this, it was during his kingship that Mercia emerged victorious during a campaign against the Welsh kingdom of Powys, briefly annexing the territory. He was overthrown by the usurper Beornwulf in 823, and nothing is known of his later life. Ceolwulf’s coins are notable for their especial crudeness, with many of his portraits made up of little more than disjointed series of pellets and crescents around a disproportionately large eye.
