Iron Age Dragonesque Brooch
£220.00
Iron Age Dragonesque Brooch (broken)
22x39mm, 6.91g
A bronze ‘Dragonesque’ brooch, of S-shape, with zoomorphic head, oval body, decorated with geometric incuse cells with remains of blue and yellow-coloured enamel, the eye detailed in blue. The ‘Dragonesque’ form of this brooch is typically Romano-British, and though it appears first after the start of the Roman conquest of southern England in AD 43, the type incorporates native artistic elements. Dragonesque brooches were not only decorative objects, but also functional fasteners – a strongly-curved pin (missing on this example) would be capable of holding a thick fold of cloth.
Attractive, bright enamels.
