£4,250.00
Henry VIII 1509-1547AD Gold Crown of the double-rose Second Coinage mm. rose
S2273, 25mm, 3.57g
The obverse displays a double-rose crowned with a crowned ‘h’ and ‘K’ in the field for Henry and Katherine of Aragon. The reverse shows the arms of England within a crowned shield.
In 1526 the crown of the double-rose, valued at 5 shillings and of 22 carat fineness, replaced the crown of the rose, introduced earlier that year at 4 shillings and sixpence to compete with the French ecu au soleil. The value of the gold at this time was increased by 10% with the purpose of preventing the loss of gold to continental Europe.
Attractive full flan example with clear legends, a prime example of splendid Tudor art!
