Henry IV AD 1399-1413 Silver Groat **Extremely Rare**

Light coinage

Crowned bust facing, annulet to right of crown, 9 arches to tressure/Cross

London

S1726, 26mm, 3.61g

A well centred and well struck coin for this notoriously weak issue, small metal flaw running from the edge at 9 o’clock on the obverse to the tressure, also evident on the reverse.

The rarest type of groat for this monarch being struck by dies made for Richard II and altered.

Comes with previous collectors labels, ex F A Walters collection, Sotherby’s 24th October 1932, lot 238. ex H A Parson collection, 11th May 1954, lot 297. a strong pedigree and evidence of this coins rarity is highlighted by a comment on one of the old labels which states ‘the only other specimen (of this die combination’ in the B.M. (British Museum).
