This coin comes with an old ticket and is originally from the William J Conte Collection, more recently having been sold by Baldwins in October 1997.
Harold was the illegitimate successor to his father Cnut, and was appointed regent of England after the death of Cnut. His half-brother, Harthacnut, was the legitimate heir, but remained in Denmark for political reasons, taking over the kingdom of England in 1040AD.
