Edward the Confessor Silver Penny 1042-4066AD Sovereign/Eagles type Othgrim, York
20mm, 1.39g, SCBI 1181
A most pleasing example, well struck and centred on good metal with little wear and pleasing dark tone.
The son of Aethelred II (The Unready), and half-brother of Harthacnut. ‘The Confessor’ title was due to his piousness, and he was canonised as a saint. He is considered to be the last king of the House of Wessex. His coinage characteristically has a broad variation in weight within and between types varying in both diameter and thickness.
