Carausius, of Menapian (Belgic) origin, was a military commander. He usurped power in 286AD, during the ‘Carausian Revolt’, declaring himself emperor in Britain and northern Gaul. He held power for over six years, using the name “Emperor of the North” for himself, before being assassinated by his treasurer, Allectus, who in turn usurped power.
He struck coins that implied he was recognized by the two current, official Augusti, Diocletian and Maximian. The reverse legend on this coin, PAX AVGG(G), proclaims the peace of three Augusti.
