Constantine X was the son of Andronikos Doukas, a Paphlagonian nobleman, who is thought to have served as governor within Moesia. Constantine gained influential power after marrying his second wife, Eudokia Makrembolitissa, who was a niece of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Michael Keroularios. He succeeded Isaac I Komnenos, but faced much military and public opposition towards his system of rule.
