Gaius and Lucius
The Twelve Caesars
Rome RCV1597
18mm, 3.70g
Augustus chose to honour this city with the title of ‘colonia’ and granted parcels of land to veterans of his Egyptian campaign (32-30 BC) against Marc Antony and Cleopatra, which ended after the Battle of Actium with Octavian (Augustus) becoming the sole ruler in Rome and the transition of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. The symbol of these veterans was a Nile crocodile chained to a palm tree, which is depicted on the reverse of this coin type.
