Antoninus Pius Bronze Dupondius 138-161AD Britannia
27x28mm, 10.80g
Antoninus Pius moved the Roman frontier in Britain further north, building a new wall (referred to as the Antonine Wall) between the Clyde and the Forth, following attacks by the northern tribes during 140-144AD.
Further troubles followed in the mid 150’s AD, illustrated by archaeological evidence from sites on the Antonine Wall, showing signs of fighting and destruction. This revolt was again eventually suppressed and a “Britannia” type struck, possibly in Britain between A.D. 154-155, to celebrate the victory, this coin being an example of the type.
