Anglo Saxon Gold Thrymsa Post Crondall 655-675AD Pada Ib type Extremely rare

12x11mm, 1.34g, S.768A

A most pleasing example of this seldom see type, struck in the usual ‘pale gold’. Gold was in such short supply in post Dark Age Britain that the early coinage was struck in a mix of gold and silver to enable more to be produced. This was unsuccessful as it undermined the ‘value’ of the coins and meant that they were not accepted by many, especially foreign traders so production quickly ceased and silver coinage became the only main currency, remarkably for the following 550 years!

Obv: Helmeted bust right.
Rev: Standard inscribed TTXX, legend including runic ‘PADA’ and other lettering.

A recent detector find from England, provenance will be provided. Recorded with the EMC database held at the Fitzwilliam museum, Cambridge.
