Anglo Saxon Cloisonné Brooch Enamelled & Glass Beads, 10th/11th Century AD
27mm, 5.66g
A gilt bronze disc brooch with peripheral lugs, five remaining and three containing glass beads, decorated with white, light blue and dark blue enamel, near complete, in a ‘floral’ pattern; pin missing. The cloisonné technique utilises compartments constructed from wire then infilled with powdered, coloured ‘glass’ and fired.
A nice example of this very intricate work, remarkable what our ancestors were capable of!
