Antiochus VII originated from Side, a city in Asia Minor, and was thus nicknamed Sidetes. He was ruler of the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire, reigning from 138 to 129 BC and the last Seleucid king of notable authority. Antiochus VII Sidetes was killed in battle, and thereafter the Seleucid dynasty was confined to Syria.
