Aquilia Severa was both second and fourth wife to Elagabalus, initially preceded by Julia Paula then preceded Annia Faustina, and was then succeeded by Orbiana. After becoming empress she was also given the name Julia. She was a vestal virgin, a priestesses of Vesta, goddess of the hearth. By marrying Aquilia Severa, Elagabalus, a devotee of the sun god El-Gabal (hence adopted name), symbolised the marriage of his god with Vesta.
