Justin II was Eastern Roman Emperor from 565 to 574AD. He was married to the Byzantine princess Sophia, and nephew of Justinian I and the Empress Theodora, and was therefore a member of the Justinian Dynasty. War with the Sassanid Empire dominated his reign with the loss of much of Italy. He is recognised as presenting the Cross of Justin II to Saint Peter’s, in Rome.
