Medieval Limoges Enamelled Mount, Winged Animal
c.15th Century AD
Max. 59mm, 18g
Enamelled objects have been produced at Limoges, in south-western France, over several centuries up to the present day. This piece is from the first period of its European importance, when from the 12th century to c.1370 there was a large industry producing metal objects decorated with enamel using the champlevé technique, where cells are filled with vitreous enamel. Most of the objects from this period are religious in nature for example cross fittings and reliquaries.
