£850.00
Cnut Silver Penny 1016-1035AD Quartrefoil type. Moneyer Aethelwine, Maldon mint – Rare
19mm, 1.01g, S1157
A lovely coin, dark tone and well struck.
Cnut was a Dane, the son of Sweyn Forkbeard and was king of England, Denmark and Norway, having won the throne of England from Edmund II (Ironside) after centuries of Viking raids.
Three main types of coins were struck during the reign of Cnut, the quatrefoil (this coin being an example), pointed helmet and short cross, each type having regional variations even from the same mint and moneyer.
This coin comes with an old ticket and was part of the Arnott collection.
