Cnut Silver Penny 1016-1035AD Quartrefoil type. Moneyer Oswig, Ilchester (Somerset) mint – Extremely Rare

19mm, 0.83g, S1157

Cracked in front of bust leading up to edge of coin at 12 o’clock but stable, probably a result of Viking’s checking the quality of the metal by bending and scoring with a knife (often referred to as ‘peck marking’).

Cnut was a Dane, the son of Sweyn Forkbeard and was king of England, Denmark and Norway, having won the throne of England from Edmund II (Ironside) after centuries of Viking raids.
Three main types of coins were struck during the reign of Cnut, the quatrefoil (this coin being an example), pointed helmet and short cross, each type having regional variations even from the same mint and moneyer.
