Edmund is considered to have originated from East Anglia, though little is known about him. He was killed in c.870AD for refusing to renounce Christ, following ongoing hostilities after a combined invasion by Norse warriors. He became venerated as a saint and a martyr, and his shrine made Bury St Edmunds a significant place of pilgrimage. The memorial coinage was issued around the time East Anglia was absorbed into Wessex by Edward the Elder.
